but by and large they are figureheads that stem from a true reign of leadership that belong to another era. Also today there are complaints that average citizens are less
involved, not as intelligent as they have been in the past and sometimes downright ignorant of the politics of the day. They vote by looks, sound bites, gossip and take
their responsibility very lightly. Many in countries like the United States do not even show up. While volunteer election workers encourage people to vote, many truthfully do not have the
wherewithal to make sound decisions. At least, that is what appears to be true. If they stay home, it makes sense. Still, people applaud the idea that democracy is equated
with rule by the citizenry and every voice should be heard, whether it be by the pushing of a button or a punching of a chad. And while voting has
become very sophisticated and open to all, the representative democracy is really just that. The people only voice their opinions to an extent. While democracy is something taken for
granted today, it may come as a surprise that some of the greatest thinkers of all time frowned on democracy. Why? They too saw that the people needed leadership. The
general public was thought not quite capable of making the big decisions. While Machiavelli saw that princes should rule well, and the people should be rather quiet, Aristotle saw man
as a political animal. Each theorist did have a different point of view. In Discourses, Machiavelli suggests that a republic would have to create patriotism and civic virtue.
