in society. Both offer us an examination of how aristocracy is often mistaken in its assumptions and how people can overlook the demands of aristocracy in pursuing their own form
of identity. In the following paper we examine the two stories as they address aristocracy. Daniel Deronda When Daniel is young we see him living the typical life
of the aristocracy. He is ignorant of who he truly is, and where he truly comes from. His parents died when he was young and he has been under the
care of a wealthy man, a man who ranks high in the aristocratic society. As such we note how Daniel does what any other rich young man would do. He
spends his days doing little else but playing and gaming. He pursues idle endeavors which only dull the senses and give us a look at what the life of the
aristocrat is like. When Daniel turns 21, however, he begins to look outside his aristocratic world and see what lies beyond. He begins to question who he is, and
what the world can perhaps offer, outside of aristocracy. He eventually discovers his Jewish heritage, and also begins to understand how selfish and less than righteous the aristocracy truly is.
Eliot provides us with a very intricate look at the aristocracy from these various perspectives. At first we are given the uselessness of the aristocrats life. They are individuals
who care nothing for their society, for the advancement of the human race, from a righteous perspective, and they are the individuals who essentially control and oppress all other people.
They are the ones in charge because they have the money. We are then provided with a more in-depth understanding of these realities when we see Daniel discover who he
