violent confrontation. This is incredible, since nonpartisan agencies have repeatedly said that without reform, health care will bankrupt the United States. This paper examines some of the arguments in favor
of universal health care. Discussion It would seem to be obvious to anyone who hasnt been living under a rock that the U.S. health care system is a mess. Its
ruinously expensive, selective, exclusive and still doesnt provide very good care. For that, people have to go to places like Costa Rica. The single largest cause of personal bankruptcy in
the U.S. is medical bills, yet many Americans dont seem to understand that we are long past the point where something has to be done. The health care reform
that squeaked through Congress earlier this year is not a particularly good bill, but it does provide some needed measures-and its the first reform that anyone has been able to
enact in over 100 years. As long as the United States is run by corporations, not the American people, this egregious state of affairs-where every tiny gain for the middle
and lower classes is offset by a huge win by the elite, who pour money into campaigns designed to preserve the status quo-will continue. But the bill has good stuff
in it, even if it doesnt go far enough. Its a shame and a scandal that President Obama had to craft legislation that would pass both houses of Congress rather
