opinions. As Lincoln and Shackleton (2004) point out, gays are entitled to marry just like heterosexuals are. Adele (2008) makes this observation as well noting that this prohibition
is a substantive one just as was women being kept out of certain occupations in our earlier history simply because of their sex. Gays are prohibited from marrying because
of their sexual orientation (Mercier, 2008). They are allowed to marry but they are not allowed in most cases to marry someone of the same sex. There is,
in fact, a federal law (the Defense of Marriage Act) that prohibits such marriages (Hotakainen, 2009). Despite this fact, some consider the prohibition against same-sex marriage an issue of
equality (Auchmuty, 1994; Lincoln and Shackleton, 2004). They contend that such prohibitions keep homosexuals from marrying someone to whom they are sexually attracted yet heterosexuals are allowed that
right (Lincoln and Shackleton, 2004). Supporters of same-sex marriage are thus arguing on the basis that the implicit definition of marriage is that it is a "sacred and socially
sanctioned union of two adults who are sexually attracted to each other" (Lincoln and Shackleton, 2004, p. 32). The intent of this paper, however, is to explore the thesis
that sexual attraction has nothing to do with marriage. The thesis can be presented, however, that: marriage is a holy union between two people for the purpose of
promoting the interests of the family and the individuals that are members of that family. Although both sides of the argument will be explored, this thesis
will be supported with a look at the positives surrounding gay marriage. First, an argument outlining those positives will be made. Secondly, that argument will be refuted.
