couples. The media has offered numerous examples of the ways in which same sex marriage provides an excellent example of where emotion, religious beliefs, and moral outrage are pitted against
objective interpretation of the actual case law surrounding the issue. All of these facts are worth considering in the context of the rights and freedoms of homosexual couples in
America. Regardless of that fact and despite the many political issues associated with it, the fact remains that the many churches of America are also protected by the Constitution and
no government mandate can decide what sort of relationships it can and cannot support within a religious context. When representatives of the United Methodist churches met in Cleveland in May
of 2000 for its quadrennial General Conference meeting, the collective churchs prohibitions against same-sex unions and gay ordination were upheld. A statement calling the practice of homosexuality "incompatible with Christian
teaching" was also reaffirmed. These straightforward facts must be considered in the decisions made by any individual parish and bear a certain measure of repetition. According to information from the
United Methodist News Service (05-09-00), the issue has come up at every general conference if the UMC since 1972. The United Methodist Church does not recognize or support same-sex unions
or the ordination of homosexuals. Period. It is worth noting, as do Wood and Boch (1995) that: "The UMC, the second largest Protestant body in the U.S., is far more
