of the nation. While some people believe in the old adage of "an eye for an eye" other people believe that it is never right to take the life of
another human being, no matter what they have done. There are many different forms of thought that vary from those two, but those are the two obvious sides of the
issue. The following paper presents both sides of the issue, in most respects, but argues that the death penalty does work and that it should be in place in any
state that chooses to have such laws. In Favor of the Death Penalty In discussing the issue we first note that
many people argue that the government does not make good choices when deciding if someone is guilty or not and that often times there are racial concerns as well. These
are strong foundations that illustrate how state governments should not be in control of choosing who gets to live and who dies. Humans are prone to make mistakes and there
are constantly people being released from prison who were wrongly accused, and set free years later. There are also those who argue
that the death penalty is not a deterrent against crimes when the death penalty is in place. One author, in fact, states that homicides actually went up in California
when the death penalty was in place for many years: "a dramatic new study shows that homicides increased twice as fast during the years in which California carried out executions
