conception until natural death" (Brownback 5). It has been close to twenty years since Reagans speech and over 30 years since the Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade, which
overturned laws against abortion throughout the country, yet the issue of abortion still remains one of the nations most divisive issues. Both sides of this issue offer logical and persuasive
arguments, with many of the pro-life arguments drawing on religious restrictions against murder. While these arguments are legitimate, considering the pluralistic nature of the United States, it is more persuasive
to look at the logic behind the two positions in humanistic terms and specifically in terms of the principles on which the US was founded. Such an examination shows the
pro-life position to be the stance closest to American ideals. The US is, first and foremost, a country that advocates respect for life and individual liberty. To appreciate how this
applies to the abortion, consider the arguments presented for the pro-choice position. The pro-choice position is asserts that, first of all, it cannot be determined scientifically when "personhood" begins.
Furthermore, pro-choice proponents argue that while an embryo deserves respect as part of the human gamete, this respect should not become so absolute as preclude destruction of that embryo when
a woman decides this is advisable (Ponnuru 37). Whatever the rhetoric that is involved in this argument, the bottom line is that simply belonging to the "human species doe snot
confer a right not to be killed" (Ponnuru 37). Considering this, one is faced with the question of where to draw the line on who can legitimately be killed and
