censorship is not, and never has been, effective in keeping children from being aware of this material. This is a very contentious subject and a final answer will ultimately depend on the students opinions and how strongly he or she feels about the matter. Discussion At its most basic level, censorship is the imposition of ones will on another, whether they wish it or not. Supporters of censorship cite the need to "protect" children from seeing objectionable material in their homes. They also argue that watching violence on television leads to violent behavior in real life. Opponents of censorship argue that they are adults, and prefer to control the content of the programs they choose to view. They suggest that parents actually parent their children, and not rely on society to do their job by curtailing the pleasures of others. Censoring TV content is hypocritical. Murder, rape, robbery, adultery, drug use, alcoholism and other situations portrayed on television are problems that are found in society in general, but television is very coy about showing them in detail. There is a school of thought that says if people, especially young people, saw exactly what its like to be shot and how painful it is, they might not be so eager to seem "cool" by carrying guns. But television doesnt show what its really like, perhaps because it is so ugly; instead, it hints at reality. Of course, there is a difference between real life and fantasy, but entertainment is not reality but heightened reality, so theoretically it should be even more explicit in its depictions of life than it already is.
