great evils and has no place in a civilized society. It dehumanizes both the slave and the slave-holder and encourages behavior that is the very epitome of wickedness. Slavery is
only possible when one group defines another as sub-human and uses their cultural traditions against them. That is, when one group decides that anothers traditions are "primitive" or "foolish" or
even "dangerous," its a very short step to denigrating the entire population of that group. And from there, its very easy to label the group as useless or even as
a threat. History tells us that the British were instrumental in creating the slave trade between Africa and the Americas. The early British colonies in the Chesapeake region used
many indentured servants at first, but gradually began to use more slaves for the simple reason that slaves were property and owned for life unless freed by their master. Indentured
servants were freed at the end of their contract, so from the sheer economic standpoint slaves were more practical. It was also found that the Chesapeake was good for growing
tobacco, which is a labor-intensive crop, and more labor was needed for the plantations (Faragher et al.). Thus, slavery has been a part of the culture of North America and
the United States since before the country was founded. But just because something is a long-standing tradition doesnt make it right. There are those who believe that somehow
