as it once was in the United States, but its still a problem because of the effects of these pregnancies on the lives of the people involved. Teens who have
babies lose much of their future. This paper argues that one of the best ways to prevent teen pregnancy is to make oral contraceptives available to young people. The paper
also suggests that by making contraceptives available teens will be forced to confront their decision to be sexually active, and to become informed about the risks (STDs, AIDS) that entails.
Discussion The latest figures are available only to 2006, when it was found that "750,000 women younger than 20 became pregnant"; this was the first time the rate had increased
in a decade (" U.S. Teenage Pregnancies, Births and Abortions: National and State Trends and Trends by Race and Ethnicity" 2). The rate was up for both inexperienced and sexually
experienced teens, the latter defined as "those who had ever had intercourse" ("U.S. Teenage Pregnancies" 2). The fact that experienced girls were getting pregnant-that number increased as well, for the
"first time in over a decade" ("U.S. Teenage Pregnancies" 2). The rate of abortion among teens was "19.3 abortions per 1,000 women. This figure was 56% lower than its peak
in 1988, but 1% higher than the 2005 rate" ("U.S. Teenage Pregnancies" 2). For the period 1986-2006, the proportion of teen pregnancies that ended in abortion declined nearly one-third, "from
