Despite the fact that we wish to take the position that illegal immigrants have hurt the economy, research in general does not support that conclusion. Most sources argue that illegal
immigrants either have no effect on the economy overall, or have helped it slightly. Perhaps the question should be why the perception persists that illegal immigration is negative when it
appears the opposite is true. One reason may be as simple as human nature. When the economy is stumbling, as the U.S. economy is, and has been for over
six years, its in our nature to want to blame someone for our misery. The illegal immigrants, as a group, are easy targets because they are, after all, doing something
illegal and apparently getting away with it. Then there is the fact that its now government policy to provide education and medical care to the children of such immigrants (though
to do less would be inhumane); plus the fact that the job market continues to be very tough. Add all of this together and its easy to blame immigrants for
lack of work-though they take the jobs most Americans dont want. Still, there is a profound sense that they are getting away with something for which they should be punished,
not rewarded, and that apparently ties in directly to the perception that their presence is harming the economy. Most of the experts have a different view, though there are those
