of the earth. This paper presents both sides of the argument, and takes the stance that global warming is real and a threat. Discussion Its amazing that anyone still argues that there is no global warming. The ice caps are melting, ocean levels are rising, the atmosphere is becoming increasingly disturbed causing more, stronger storms, and the only new thing in the equation is human activity in the last century. Yet there are those who refuse to take it seriously, or even admit there is a problem. Perhaps the difficulty lies in the fact that the problem seems overwhelming, so people would rather believe nothings wrong than face it; or perhaps its that the real damage wont be obvious until its too late to do anything about it. S. Fred Singer writes that global warming is not a problem because its part of the natural heating and cooling cycle of the earth (2001). He points out that we expect summers to be hot and winters cold because we understand that mechanism, but since we dont understand the mechanism behind global warming, we are jumping to unwarranted conclusions (Singer, 2001). He says that there is no way to tell what impact human activity has on global warming: "We know the theory, which says that human activity could be important, but the theory cannot be trusted until it has been verified" (Singer, 2001). He also argues that satellites have shown no increase in warming since 1979; and that what there may be in future will probably be due to a "small" greenhouse gas effect. He winds up by saying that in future, our children and grandchildren will laugh at us for being concerned about the problem. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ross Gelbspan disagrees completely and lists both large and small effects he attributes ...
