Von Huben 10/2010 Please Introduction According to the Constitution of the United States, everyone has equal rights. That charming theory doesnt always play out in practice, however, and sex offenders tend to be among those for whom the concept of rights is often rendered academic. This paper argues only one side of the question of control orders; it argues that control orders violate a sex offenders rights. Discussion There is a great deal of screaming about childrens safety being used to deny sex offenders their rights, though a clear-sighted and reasonable person might well ask whether or not Americans really love their children as they claim. If children were as important as Americans say, then teachers would make as much money as pro athletes, and it wouldnt be like pulling teeth to get bond issues passed to raise money for education. Still, squawking about the "threat to our future" posed by sex offenders is often enough to get laws passed that overstep the rights of the individual and cross into oppression and a denial of rights. There is no denying that sexual crimes are heinous and particularly disturbing. But at times there is room for doubt: the offender may be mentally ill (although this defense is sneered at by many people, their derision doesnt change the fact that some people genuinely need help). Sometimes a sexual "offender" is a 17-year old boy who had sex with his 17-year old girlfriend, who was a willing partner, in a state where shes too young legally ...
