ultimate violation of the most fundamental of human rights - the right to life. Both sides are equally fervent in their beliefs and there can be, unfortunately, no middle
ground. Those Americans who support gun control believe that doing so will make the United States a safer place for adults and children to live. However, there are
those who argue with equal ferocity that limiting the number of guns through regulatory controls will actually endanger the lives and safety of citizens. This is an emotional issue
that can ignite strong passions, but it is only through logical inquiry can any appropriate conclusions be drawn. Guns dont kill people, people do. There is a mistaken belief
that there is a cause-and-effect relationship between increased gun ownership and instances of violent crime. But criminological studies that have been conducted since 1978 offer persuasive evidence that national
statistics for homicides and robberies by guns have not greatly increased from what they were back in the early to mid 1970s (Otero). However, in a twenty-year period from
1974 until 1994, the number of firearms increased an astounding 75 percent, to more than 200 million (Otero). If guns were to blame for crimes involving guns, the number
of crimes committed would have increased at the same rate. Mathematical calculations can convincingly prove that only a negligible number of guns "are actually involved in any crime" (Otero).
For example, in 1993, criminologist Gary Kleck hypothesized that every one of the 1,134,102 incidents (both fatal and non-fatal) involving firearms were each committed with a different gun, which
purposely overestimates the number of guns that are actually involved in committing violent crimes (Otero). When this number is divided by the number of guns that were in circulation
