a story of loyalty and honor, and revenge. This paper is a close examination of the reunion of Odysseus and his dog Argos, upon Odysseuss return to Ithaca. Discussion Odysseus has been gone from home for 20 years, and during that time his son Telemachus has grown into a fine young man, his wife Penelope has remained faithful and the swineherd, Eumaeus, has continued to protect Odysseuss lands as best he can. But they are virtually the only three people in the kingdom who still care about him. This is particularly evident in the fact that a bunch of freeloaders have moved into Odysseuss palace and tried to get Penelope to forget her husband and marry one of them. They hardly seem to be loyal subjects. But even more telling is the fact that no one knows Odysseus when he gets home. Of course hes greatly changed after 20 years, but even the swineherd and his son, both of whom are exceedingly loyal to him and love him very much, fail to recognize him. But Argos knows him the moment he sees him again. That is probably the most important point in the scene: that the dog knows his master instantly: "Now as they talked on, a dog that lay there / lifted up his muzzle, pricked his ears..." (17.317-318). We read that the dog is lying on a dung heap; hes full of ticks and "half-dead from neglect" (17.300). But as soon as he sees Odysseus, he becomes alert: "But the moment he sensed Odysseus standing by / he thumped his tail, nuzzling low, and his ears dropped, / though he had no strength to drag himself an inch / toward his master" (17.329-332).
