In fact, when a street peddler holds out his hand, some people feel too guilty to pass him by without giving him even a pittance. After all, he is so
much worse off than they. The Christian charity and Buddhist mercy propositions feed into the guilt that says that one should help his fellow man. But whose fault is it
that the man, or the woman, is poor? Of course, it is his or her own fault. Another argument might be that although people are poor due to their own
laziness, they deserve sympathy anyway. But why? By providing sympathy, one is using resources in a detrimental way. One can better use their possessions and sympathies and gear it towards
other worthwhile causes. There are other causes more important than the poor, more important than donning an apron on Thanksgiving to work in a soup kitchen, and more important
than creating a basket of food to feed the starving. Of course, those who help do not usually do so for altruistic reasons anyway. No, it is not the tax
write off or simply looking good in front of others. Rather, the helper feels better about themselves. Helping feeds the ego. However, by helping those who should not be helped,
valuable energy and resources are being thrown away. This is not a popular position, but in examining the works of great thinkers, perhaps the idea that the lazy need not
