far too much on drugs to go about conducting our daily affairs. For some of us those drugs are drugs we obtain on the street. For the vast
majority of us, however, we obtain our drugs from the medical establishment itself. Regardless of the source, Americans as a rule are over medicated. We have extended the
"supersize it" mentality that we use to make most of our contemporary lifestyle choices into the choices that we make in terms of the drugs that we willingly introduce into
our bodies. While just a couple of generations ago it was more uncommon than common for an individual to be taking any sort
of prescription drug, today just the opposite is true. This phenomenon has been attributed to a variety of factors ranging from an increase in our understanding of illness and
the corresponding improvement in the way we treat it, to the ever increasing psychological and physiological stressors that characterize our modern world. One very real factor in
our escalating drug use, however, is the pharmaceutical industry itself. It might be contended, in fact, that this industry has carefully orchestrated our growing dependence on prescription drugs.
Big Pharma now represents a practically inescapable component of our lives. We are constantly barraged with advertisements for one drug or
another. We are told we are depressed, that our sex lives are inadequate, and that we simply need an extra edge to be able to function. Critser is just
one author that has recently taken on Big Pharma. He contends that drugs are altering American lives, minds, and bodies in ways that few of us would ever imagine.
