Strengths and weaknesses associated with the Pro side of the issue Linda Hirshman maintains that despite the increased opportunities for women, the nature of marriage and childrearing is largely unchanged, as women continue to bear the lions share of responsibility in regards to maintaining a home and raising children. A principal strength of her article is that she provides comprehensive background on the number of women in the workforce, and their achievement in gaining access to public power structures. Hirshman describes how professional women began to drop out of their careers in the early 1990s in order to devote themselves to their families and that these women stated that they were choosing this option voluntarily. However, this author argues that their "choice" is illusionary and derives from the social belief that women should be responsible for childrearing and homemaking. The situation is complicated by the fact that the upper echelons of the workplace have become more demanding, but nevertheless Hirshman assert that the end effect of conservative culture is to reinforce traditional gender roles. This is a salient, well thought out argument and the anecdotal evidence that Hirshman provides substantiates her position. Furthermore, the empirical evidence she cites, such as the survey conducted by Myra Hart of the Harvard Business School, also substantiates her point that large percentages of professional women put their careers on hold to attend to the demands of motherhood.
