in expectation and in ratification of the different conventions by different countries with a diverse range of cultures. The main convention that is cited is the International Bill of Rights
which was completed in 1966 by the United Nations General Assembly, to which Great Britain was a signatory. This was followed by a further two covenants including the International Covenant
on Civil and Political Rights (Wadham and Leach, 1995). The most recent and far reclining piece of legislation is that of the Human Rights Act 1998, which came into force
in 2000. The basis of the act was the European Convention on Human rights and basic human rights that are enshrined in many areas of agreement and international legislation to
which the UK has been a signatory. Therefore, in theory the enactment and enforcement of this Act should have been seen as a manifestation of the ethics and morals that
were sought by those in the country and those who made the law and give a new legal basis for decisions in all area of law. With the agreement to
convention and the enactment of the Human Rights Act 1998 it is assumed by many that human rights are well protected. However, when an examination is undertaken of the way
in which human rights are protected, the value of independent organisations such as Amnesty International becomes increasing apparent, serving as an unofficial check on the power paradigms in operation.
There are several ways in which the Human Rights Act and the conventions protect basic human rights. However to argue that the rights are protected the law is only a
