This is a 6 page paper discussing emotions and rational intellect. Traditionally in ancient Greek philosophy as seen in Plato’s Republic, emotions are considered as separate from rational intellect. In Plato, he presents three souls in the human body which consist of rational intellect, emotions and will. For Plato, all three souls must work in harmony in order for a man to be considered just. Regardless of Plato’s arguments however, examples can be given which show that perhaps emotions and intellect are not developmentally separate and in all cases, the intellect and emotions have an effect on each other in addition to having a mutual control over the will.

Platos Republic, he tried to draw a systematic analogy between the operation of society and that of individual human being, so as he saw the structure of societies made up
of integral yet separate parts, so too did he see the human mind made up of separate parts (Kemerling, 2001). Although he admitted that the parts within the human mind
were complex, the simple fact that humans often felt torn when trying to do things in everyday life between their emotional need for doing something and their rational thoughts (Republic
436b). Examples in everyday life are easy to find especially during the holiday season. Humans during the Christmas season wish to give
good gifts to their friends and family but often do not have the expenses which would allow them to do so. However, people may use credit cards to get them
through their purchases knowing that in the new year, they will still be faced with debts they cannot handle. Why do humans do this? Emotionally, they feel that they want
to meet the needs of what will make them feel good and in turn what will make others around them feel good. However, rationally they know that they cannot afford
