Democracy is predicated on majority vote yet it is also predicated on the assumption that certain human rights apply equally to all. Among some peoples and cultures, however, the majority views human rights in a much different light than what the mainstream world accepts as universal human rights. Islam is an excellent example of this contention. Using this example, the thesis can be presented that: Democratic principles are not universally applicable The concept of democracy, of course, is not a new one. During the Western Enlightenment writers and philosophers like John Locke philosophized on such concepts. Indeed, the modern concept of democracy has benefited from the attentions of the greatest minds in the world. Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle alike all mused on the principles of democratic rule. Even Machiavelli, the Sixteenth Century Italian ruler, would consider the basic premises of democratic rule. These philosophers would be followed in history by the Western Enlightenment where one writers and philosopher after another philosophized on such concepts. Democratic principles were consequently embedded in the Magna Carta and, of course, in the U.S. Constitution. The question of whether or not a synthesis can be achieved between Islamic law, however, and the principles of democracy is complex to say the least. Can the tension that currently characterizes the relationship that exists between Islamic Law and democratic principles be addressed while still maintaining Islamic authenticity?
