While all children seem to suffer, one has to wonder how divorce affects adolescents in particular. Just as they are starting to notice the opposite sex, they find that their parents have fallen out of love. What might that do to the psyche of the teenager? Once again, there is a sense that divorce hurts, but a new book called For Better of For Worse, by Hetherington and Kelly, claim that the majority of children-or as many as 75% to 80% (Corliss & McLaughlin, 2002, p.44)--are doing well despite a parental divorce. According to authors, little long term problems occur and within two years of a parental divorce, the kids are alright (Corliss & McLaughlin, 2002). The study also revealed a surprising result. It seems that some of the girls or women would fare better than had they stayed in a miserable family situation (Corliss & McLaughlin, 2002). Of course, experts generally concur that it is a bad idea to stay together for the children. It is much better for children to live in a single family home than one where there is constant bickering. It seems that when mom and dad are happy, the family should be happy. Reportedly, 70% (Corliss & McLaughlin, 2002, p.44) of divorced parents are happier than prior to the split. Of course, this is arguably not really indicative of how the kids are faring. It is true that living in chaos is no good, but many parents today seem to focus on their own romantic lives at the expense of the children.
