of the federalist architects clearly based their designs upon neoclassical styles, they did so on their own terms, that reflects a decidedly American spirit.
For instance, it was Latrobe that was responsible for discovering Pompeii and many other Greek and Roman ruins, and this generated an excitement that was reflected in
architecture (Lev, 2004). Upon his return to America, he incorporated many of the Greek and Roman architectural elements into his designs, revealing not only a Greek and Roman influence,
but also the spirit of initiative and discovery that very much embodied Federal period ideals (Lev, 2004). However, these elements were very much tempered with upholsteries and fabrics that
were very much English in design, and represented a comfort based on the past (Lev, 2004). Therefore, the Federalist period was very
much based upon the unity of a plethora of ideas and styles, each contributing to a unique style that expressed the growing nationalism of the era (Lev, 2004). However,
it was not an exact reproduction of the neo-classical either (Lev, 2004). In other words, although clearly influenced by neo-classicism, the Federalist era architecture had its own distinctive attributes
as well (Lev, 2004). This evident blending of past and present very much expressed the Federal era values of retaining the rich culture and tradition of the past but incorporating
them into an opportunistic future (Lev, 2004). For instance, Federal era architecture could be recognized by elements such as its balanced, symmetric designs (Lev, 2004). The Roman and
