high ceilings, large bathrooms and closets and things of that nature exude affluence. Small places with clutter are characteristic of the lower classes. Small homes that sport cheap paraphernalia, particularly
in trailer parks, are considered trashy. Modern art and architecture however is aligned with affluence. There is a reverence for these new structures. Yet, modern architects can create a sense
of affluence or its opposite. That is, there is sometimes a political message intertwined with an artists creation. In exploring this topic, two individuals will be considered-Cecil Balmond and Louis
Kahn-each of whom was influenced by their own upbringing. Balmond and Kahn both bring great talent to the world, but Kahn was plagued by a feeling of unfairness and
poverty. His negative life struggle and bad choices were complimented by a disagreeable personality. Balmond on the other hand is playful and perhaps even quixotic. His rejection of practicality leads
him to create things that are open. Balmond utilizes negative space whereas Kahn packs things in so that structures are sturdy. Perhaps Kahns fear of losing it all plays a
role. Either way, one can say that affluence and architecture are inextricably linked. In examining this topic, affluence in society must be explored. II. What is
an Affluent Society? The concept of the affluent society sounds positive. After all, affluence is something good, but of course, there are those who look at affluence and suggest
that if some segment of society is affluent, that means that the rest of society is quite the opposite. Yet, does affluence mean that there will be others who are
