obvious differences, Kuala Lumpur (the capital city of Malysia) and Dubai (the Capital city Of United Arab Emirates) share many similarities in terms of their cityscapes. Both culture and
architecture are directly linked to these cities history and their respective environments. The thesis can be presented, in fact, that:
both the environment in which these cities were built and their colonial history have resulted in similar architectural styles and spatial layouts.
The intent of this paper is to explore both the similarities and the differences of these cities
and to tie each into the factors that caused them. Similarities Kuala Lampur
and Dubai share a common environment. Both cities are located in a hot and humid region. They also share a strong Islamic background. Consequently, there are three
basic architectural elements that typify both cities. 1. Buildings are constructed in close proximity to one another and oriented so that people could better escape the somewhat inhospitable
environment as they moved from building to building. Their time outside was limited intentionally. 2. Numerous decorative elements of the buildings reflect the diversity of cultural influences
these cities have had. 3. The building materials utilized in construction have varied over time from a predominant use of local easily-obtainable materials to more technologically progressive materials
