innocent boy that is learning about the truths in life and as such coming upon some harsh discoveries that will help him grow and learn as he finds his identity.
While the young boy possesses many different characteristics the following paper examines three of the characteristics possessed by the young man. The traits examined are idealism, intelligence, and religiousness.
Araby The young man in this story is a young man who is clearly religious, if only because he was raised in a religious setting. In the beginning of
the story we see that the house he lives in used to belong to a priest, a figure he seems to have found wondrous and mysterious. The narrator tells us
that he "found a few paper-covered books, the pages of which were curled and damp: The Abbot, by Walter Scott, The Devout Communicant, and The Memoirs of Vidocq" (Joyce). In
these works he found mystery and a sense of devotion that helps us understand his romantically religious nature. This is further illustrated when we see how he envisions this
young woman that he loves: "I imagined that I bore my chalice safely through a throng of foes. Her name sprang to my lips at moments in strange prayers and
praises which I myself did not understand" (Joyce). In this we see him envisioning himself as something of a noble knight, a figure that was driven by integrity honor and
ideas of religion. His intentions towards this young woman are pure and loving as though they were a religion themselves. If he were not a young man of religious tendencies
then he would not envision love, or even lust, in such a manner but would indicate that he were a crude and materialistic type of young man. But the nobility,
