with a girl, and Sonnys Blues is a short story about two brothers, one of whom is a drug addict and musician. From this simple perspective it is very clear
that the two stories are very different. But, as is the case with many pieces of literature, one can also find similarities in the two. The following paper compares and
contrasts the two stories. Araby and Sonnys Blues Both Araby and Sonnys Blues are told from a first person perspective. In Araby the story is told about the
boy and his obsession with the girl from the boys perspective. In Sonnys Blues the story is told by Sonnys brother, the one who seems put together and stable in
his life, as opposed to Sonny who is a drug addict and also an incredibly gifted and brilliant musician. They are also both stories about struggle. In Araby the
boy is struggling with his desires and his coming of age through his obsession with the young girl. He is frustrated, at a loss, and perhaps even filled with despair.
His struggles are seen in the following, as well as throughout the story: "I chafed against the work of school. At night in my bedroom and by day in the
classroom her image came between me and the page I strove to read" (Joyce). With Sonnys brother there is a sense of helplessness and despair, as well as anger,
that makes up the struggle he experiences in relationship to Sonny. Clearly he and Sonny grew up in the same surroundings, impoverished and struggling, but the narrator became a school
teacher while Sonny became addicted to drugs. The narrator struggles with a sense of guilt about that, and struggles about what to do concerning his brother. At the same time
