Language Research Compiled for Enterprises Inc. 11/2001 to Use This Paper Properly, INTRODUCTION This paper will explain the history of the Spanish language and the major influence that the Arabic language has had on it as well. Also included are examples of Spanish words that are derived from Arabic sources. HISTORY OF THE SPANISH LANGUAGE The original and most pure form of Spanish is the early Castilian language that was early on from the Latin roots after the Romans conquest of Hispania in the 3rd century A.D. When the Roman Empire fell, Spain "was overrun by the Visigoths, and in the 8th century the Arabic-speaking Moors conquered all but the northernmost part of the peninsula" (Katzner PG). Later the Christians conquered Castile which was independent. Castilian became the main dialect at that time and what later developed from that austere beginning is the Spanish language as we know it today. The most popular of all the Romance languages, Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages not only in the number of speakers who use it but as far as the number of countries it is in as well. "Besides being spoken in Spain, it is the official language of all the South American republics except Brazil and Guyana, of the six republics of Central America, as well as of Mexico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. Additionally it is spoken in the Balearic and Canary islands, in parts of Morocco and the west coast of Africa, and also in Equatorial Guinea" (Katzner PG).
