the mischief of genies and the various condition of humanity as they struggle through life. There are many themes, many elements, and many characters within this novel. The following paper focuses on one story that offers us a man with existential perspectives, and then discusses one story that involves the presentation of aesthetics. Existentialism While there are likely many characters within this particular novel that demonstrate characteristics or aspect of existential thought and ideals, we focus, due to lack of space, on one individual. This comes from the story or chapter titled "The Sultan." In this particular story we have a relatively simple man, in the eyes of society, who demonstrates some powerful characteristics. In front of the Sultan a man speaks out, he is deemed a madman immediately for acting so presumptuously in front of the Sultan. He is a slave, a water carrier named Ibrahim. It is he who demonstrates aspects of existential though. He offers his story, humbly, and illustrates how he was once nothing more than a poor man whose only focus was finishing his work and smoking hashish to provide him with happiness. He states how his life was simple, how he worked hard, was loyal to God and how he was blessed with a wonderful woman. His realm of existence and happiness did not go beyond these simple and selfishly focused realities. But then he indicates that, "When the son of my friend Ugr the barber was killed my balance was disturbed and I heard people whispering" (Mahfouz, 1995; 177). In this we see that his level of awareness, his concern for others, was all of a sudden awakened, thus moving him towards a more existentialist way of thinking.
