many cases fairy tales, such as Rapnuzels story, are filled with very subtle and almost tame illustrations of much more complex subjects such as political power, selfishness, corruption and many
other realities. In the Mahfouz work we are presented with the gory details, the harsh realities of such subtleties. The following paper presents two similarities between Mahfouz work and Rapunzel:
sacrifice and the human condition. The paper then examines a difference in the two, that which addresses the detailed aspects of the stories. Similarities and Differences In Mahfouzs
work we are offered numerous stories that relate to genies and ultimate chaos. One of these tales involves a woman Shahrzad. She is the daughter of Dandan and she has
essentially sacrificed her own happiness. She remains with the Sultan so that she can perhaps help those she loves. In the case of Rapunzel we also have a woman who
is being held by someone, the sorceress, in order to keep her family safe. She has not actively chosen to sacrifice her own happiness, but this is ultimately what she
is doing as her entrapment is keeping her parents safe. As we can see, both stories involve a woman giving herself over for the happiness or the safety of others.
They are selfless woman to a great degree, and both ultimately will find their own happiness because of their sacrifice and their positions in the story. Another similarity is
ultimate themes. While Mahfouzs work is filled with a great deal of stories and characters there is the fact that the magical beings were in combat with the mortals. There
is the theme of honesty, virtue, greed, injustice and all other realities that come from close and thorough examination of a society. Although the Grimm Brothers story is far shorter,
