or no rights. The following paper first examines Arab women and then examines Fatima Mernissis "Dreams of Trespass" which involves Moroccan society but also enlightens us about Arab women.
Arab Women And Umm Kulthum One author, in examining the conditions existent in the "Egalitarian Islam and Misogynist Islamic Tradition," offers us the words of Fatima Mernissi who illustrates
why women have been, and are controlled in the Arab societies: "Sexual equality violates Islams premise, actualized in its laws, that heterosexual love is dangerous to Allahs order. Muslim
marriage is based on male dominance. The desegregation of the sexes violates Islams ideology on womens position in the social order : that women should be under the authority of
fathers, brothers, or husbands. Since women are considered by Allah to be a destructive element, they are to be spatially confined and excluded from matters other than those of the
family. Female access to non-domestic space is put under the control of males. (Mernissi 1987 : 19)" (Afshari, 2003). In many ways this covers all periods in Arabic history,
and even covers conditions now, explaining why women are often put in the position they are. This is a subject that confuses many people, especially Americans who feel, outwardly, that
