the West has sought ways in which to demonize non-Westerners, which ultimately has served to rationalize Western imperialism. In other words, the way that the West conceives of the proverbial "other," such as the Arab world and those of Arab descent, says as much about the Western mindset as it does about the people who are the focus of cultural biases. Considering this supposition, as well as the plethora of negativity that is frequently evident in mainstream media relative to Arabs and Islam, suggests that investigation into the ways in which Arabs have been portrayed in American cinema over the last several years should be enlightening as to the continuing relevance of Saids 1978 thesis. For this purpose, this investigation will primarily focus on the 1998 film The Siege, which was directed by Edward Zwick for 20th Century Fox Studios, analyzing the way in which Arabs are represented, as well as discussing the relevance of these portrayals to the films overriding message. Additionally, new films will also be explored in a similar manner in order to get a feel for the way in which American cinema is currently presenting Arab characters. The Siege The basic plot of The Siege concerns depicting how the U.S. government would react to possible terrorism direct at New York City. The hero is FBI special agent Anthony Hubbard (Denzel Washington). With his partner, Frank Haddad (Tony Shalhoub) and CIA operative Elize Kraft(aka Sharon Bridger) (Annette Bening), Hubbard races against time to prevent bombs from going off. Where the film really becomes interesting from a sociological point of view is when General William Devereaux (Bruce Willis) leads soldiers and tanks down Brooklyn streets, and begins detailing and sequestering all Arabs as possible terrorists, due to the fact that the government has declared ...
