the history of mankind and art and architecture. But, in more recent times they serve as a historical illustration of the power of Arab Nationalism. Throughout the more recent history of Egypt the nation has been controlled by imperialist European forces. With various leaders there was the hope of coming out from under that imperialistic oppression and it seems that not until they adopted a sense of Arab Nationalism did they ultimately win their freedom from European control. The following paper examines the development of Egypt involving European control throughout until the victory of their freedom in the 20th century. Pre-Nationalism "It was in the summer of 1797 that Napoleons army landed in Alexandria and advanced to Cairo" (Ashmawy, 2004). The rulers of Egypt, Murad Bey and Ibrahim Bey, who had never even heard of Napoleon, "sent a messenger with a small tribute and asked the French general to leave the country" (Ashmawy, 2004). With very little resistance Napoleon conquered Cairo and thus possessed Egypt, maintaining control for 3 years (Ashmawy, 2004). One author notes that it was this quick victory that made the people "suddenly realized how weak their states were when facing the power of Western armies and fleets" (Shuster, 2004). It is interesting to note that in the brief time that the French were there, aside from laying siege to the people and property, also ultimately brought the Egyptian people out of what one called the dark age of Egypt (Ashmawy, 2004). In doing so the French actually built schools and colleges as well as being responsible for the writing of "Description dEgypte, the most comprehensive reference on the countrys geography and culture" (Ashmawy, 2004).
