which human beings analyse and make sense of themselves, the world around them, and the relationship between human beings and the universe as a whole. It is concerned with investigating
the way that reality is perceived, the way in which nature interacts, both directly and indirectly, with human beings, and with the search for truth. It considers whether or not
there is such a thing as absolute reality, or absolute truth, or whether these are constructs which depend for their existence on human perception.
There have been different approaches to these questions over the centuries, as
different thinkers brought their perspectives to bear on the basic issues of philosophy. Idealism, for example, maintains that truth is universal and absolute. It states that the external world has
an absolute reality which is not dependent on the perceptions and consciousness of the individual. Whether or not there is anyone observing an event, the event takes place and has
its own reality. Realism maintains that the laws of science are not reliant on human experiences and perceptions, but exist independently of them: again, there is a distinction drawn between
what is real and what is perceived, and the one is not dependent on the other. Naturalism states that it is the laws of nature which govern not only the
processes of life in general, but also the aspirations and goals of the individual. The Pragmatic view sees reality as the total of individual experiences, and Existentialism sees individual experiences
as central to the development of the truths and values to which one adheres.
