between a generalist approach to practice and more traditional approaches; contrasts between various approaches to counseling; and the nature of strengths-based and solution-focused approaches to therapy. Generalist practice in
relation to other approaches to counseling Poulin (2010) specifically associates generalist practice with the strengths-based perspective on therapy, indicating that generalist practitioners of therapy "view clients and client systems from
a strengths perspective in order to recognize, support and build upon" the client familys "innate capabilities" as human beings (Poulin, 2010, p. 3). Generalist practice encompasses both "micro...interventions with individuals,
couples, and families, as well as macro interventions with organizations and communities (Poulin, 2010, pp. 3-4)). In fact, Kirst-Asheman and Hull (2009) specify that within generalist practice, a therapist selects
the best micro, mezzo or macro approach that fit with the needs of clients. Kirst-Ashman and Hull (2009) indicate that historically social workers and counselors practiced within the boundaries
of three primary categories, which were casework, group work and working with community organizations. Under this model of practice, therapists and counselors typically concentrated on one area of expertise. In
contrast to this paradigm, the generalist approach to practice, the therapist assumes a multilevel approach to developing interventions, which addresses all of the systems that interact with a particular problem
