startling and disturbing: women are overwhelmingly the victims of domestic violence-"approximately 95% of the victims ... are women"; a woman is beaten every 9 seconds in the U.S.; four million
women a year are assaulted; and four women are murdered every day by their husbands or boyfriends (Statistics about DV, 2005). In addition, prison terms for women who kill
their husbands are twice as long as those for husbands who kill their wives; and "93% of women who killed their mates had been battered by them" (Statistics about DV,
2005). These numbers clearly indicate that domestic violence is a huge problem, and also that it is directly related to the perception, still prevalent in our culture, that women
arent worth as much as men. As long as women are seen as objects, or are defined only with respect to their relationship to others (i.e., "This is Johns
wife" or "This is Jills mother", not, "This is Sue Smith, who is an artist") they will be targets of abuse, because its easy to abuse those who are not
seen as fully individualized human beings. Medical Intervention One way to approach this problem is through medical intervention, even though the actual crime of domestic violence "lies outside
the doctors domain" (Nelson, 2004, p. 22). Domestic violence is associated with a "wide range of both acute and long-term psychological, psychosomatic, and physical conditions, [but] the diagnosis can
be elusive and requires astute clinical skills" (Nelson, 2004, p. 22). This is because patients may seek treatment for a variety of other problems that seem unrelated to domestic
