air transportation industry offers numerous high performing job positions. When a manager is selecting from a pool of applicants for those positions he or she first turns to the
written application. That provides details such as educational background and the dates held in previous employment. Written applications also contain job descriptions that give the hiring manager better
understanding of a particular applicant and their qualifications. A potentially more powerful tool in human resources, however, is the personal interview and the use of appreciative inquiry. The
purpose of this paper is to consider one such appreciative inquiry interview, to discern what is learned that can be capitalized upon, and to report what the manager learned about
performance and motivation that can be of benefit to the manager in his personal and/or professional life. Appreciative
inquiry entails exploration and discovery in a manner that will complement organizational strength (Whitney, Trosten-Bloom, and Cooperrider, 2010). Appreciative inquiry combines this exploration and discovery with dreams and design
to direct destiny (Cooperrider, Whitney, Stavros, and Fry, 2008). The applicant in the interview that is being considered is actually already a higher-level employee of Lufthansa. He is
being considered for another position in the company. Thanks to the managers use of appreciative inquiry, it quickly becomes clear in this interview that the applicant is a high achiever.
