talented actors can bring to life. Its so much simpler to stick a camera in somebodys face whose dubious claim to fame involves some sort of bizarre behavior. Although some
reality shows are really well-done because the situations are real (Deadliest Catch comes to mind), most seem to appeal to viewers because they give us a glimpse of someone whose
life is out of control, perhaps making us feel better by comparison. This paper considers one of the most successful of the reality shows, The Bachelor from the sociological perspective
of symbolic interaction. Discussion Symbolic interaction focuses on the "subjective aspects of social life, rather than on objective, macro-structural aspects of social systems" (McClelland, 2000). Interactionists are more concerned with
the image of humans, rather than "their image of society," which is of concern to functionalists (McClelland, 2000). For sociologists, humans are "pragmatic actors who continually must adjust their behavior
to the actions of others" (McClelland, 2000). In order to make these adjustments, we have to be able to interpret the actions correctly (McClelland, 2000). The Bachelor seems to be
a perfect program to analyze with these factors in mind. The show takes a man who presumably wants to get married and confronts him with 25 women; during the run
of the program, the man winnows out the women until one "winner" is left. There are a number of creepy things about this, including the fact that it turns a
relationship into a lottery; theres really no guarantee that someone can find a suitable marriage partner in such a short amount of time; and the fact that the bachelor and
