terrorism. The Four Steps of the Scientific Method The four steps that well use to take a look at terrorism are: 1) Theory; 2) Experiment (observation); 3) Mathematics; and
4) Instrumentation (Technology) (The four components of the scientific method). Although all of these components work together, it may be the first that is most important, because if we
get off to a bad start, the entire project may be called into question. There have been many theories put forward to explain the reasons why terrorists make their deadly
attacks and no one definitive answer has been found. One source suggests that the first question we need to consider is whether its possible to define terrorism; if we
can, then we also want to know the reasons behind it, and whether or not it is a "legitimate mode of action" (Yousaf, 2003). Yousaf defines terrorism very
broadly as "an aggressive and violent action to force the opponent to accept ones demands" (Yousaf, 2003). While this is strictly true, it certainly doesnt meet all cases; if
we think back to some of the attacks weve witnessed, its not clear who theyre aimed at, or what result the terrorists hope to achieve. Therefore, this definition is
merely a starting point. Yousaf points out that there is a difference between criminal activity and terrorism, with the former done for personal gain and the latter to achieve a
