Each is described along with how the principal may achieve the final goal. Introduction The principles included in Senges Fifth Discipline have been referenced extensively in the literature.
The purpose of Senges work is to create learning communities because he found that this type of organization was more successful. While it may seem like an oxymoron to
discuss creating a learning community in a school, it is not. Teachers are really very isolated, spending most of their time in their classrooms. If a learning community can be
established among staff members, the outcomes should be beneficial to both staff and students. Overview of Organization The organization is an elementary school, K-5, that has a mildly diverse
student population and that is located in the suburbs. The student body of 402, is 74 percent White, 11 percent Black, 12 percent Hispanic, 2 percent Asian and 1 percent
other. Just over 32 percent receive free/reduced price lunches and 12 percent qualify for special education services. The staff is comprised of 1 administrator, the principal, 24 teachers, 5 teacher
assistants, 1 librarian, and part-time music, art and physical education teachers. The part-time teachers are at the school certain hours each week. There is also 1 office administrative assistant. Student
academic achievement is acceptable. The principal, however, would like to improve it, especially for the lower-achieving students. The principal also wants to create a real learning community. Application
of 5 Principles One might expect that that a school, an educational institution, would inherently be a learning community. This would be a false assumption because teachers are in their
