to survive and growth needs are those things that enhance a persons life. Maslow argued that human motivation is based on needs, i.e., each person is motivated to satisfy certain
needs (Business Consulting Solutions, 2010; Chapman, 2010; NetMBA, 2010; Envision Software, 2009; Boeree, 2006). He developed his theory in the late 1940s and early 1950s and was published in 1954
(Chapman, 2010), so this is an old theory that is still used today. Maslow presented his theory in the form of a pyramid that demonstrates the progressiveness of needs. The
lowest level depicts physiological needs, those things we all need for survival like air, water, rest, nourishment (Business Consulting Solutions, 2010; Chapman, 2010; NetMBA, 2010; Envision Software, 2009; Boeree, 2006).
These most basic needs are satisfied when employees receive a livable wage. That means their pay is enough to provide housing, food, utilities, etc. It also means that employers provide
appropriate rest and eating breaks for employees. ((Business Consulting Solutions, 2010). When survival needs are satisfied, they move to the second level of needs, which are safety needs (Business Consulting
Solutions, 2010; Chapman, 2010; NetMBA, 2010; Envision Software, 2009; Boeree, 2006). Employers need to provide a safe and stable work environment. This includes job security and a culture that is
free from threats (Envision Software, 2009). Other options to satisfy these needs would be medical insurance and other benefits that made employees feel safer. The third level refers to
social needs. This is the first level of growth needs. At this level, people need to feel like they belong to a group, they need friendship and they need to
