, , November 2010 properly! Introduction David Kolb developed an experiential learning theory
in the mid-1980s. It is comprised of four stages that the literature refers to as the Kolb Cycle, the Experiential Learning Cycle or as just the Learning Cycle. The four
stages are concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation (Smith, 2001; Davies, n.d.). Kolb believed that learning is a continuous spiral and an individual can begin learning
at any of the four points in that spiral (Smith, 2001). In other words, the learner could begin with abstract conceptualization or observation and reflection; learners do not have to
begin with the concrete experience. He suggested that most learning does begin with a direct and specific experience, which means the learner is actively doing something and learning what the
outcomes of that action are (Smith, 2001). From these learning cycles, Kolb identified four learning styles: converger, diverger, assimilator and accommodation (Smith, 2001). Each style blends two stages. When managing
a project, it is important to understand the learning styles of the team members. Schwalbe (2006) explains the characteristics of a project as: having a unique purpose, a temporary endeavor,
something that is designed that may begin with a broad definition that is narrowed as time progresses, something that needs resources; and has a primary sponsor or customer.
