defining such a problem. These are type, level of analysis, and possible sociological perspective (Anonymous, 2002). A practical question is posited by Anonymous (2002), which states: "How do you know
one when you see one?" One instance when an applied problem is evidence is when there is a discrepancy between the "real" and the "ideal" (Anonymous, 2002). The solution
to this problem can be found by applying sociological perspectives For these situations, sociology offers methods for restructuring systems, while simultaneously re-socializing individuals for these new systems (Anonymous, 2002). Other
scenarios describe other situations that constitute situations where an applied problem exists. For example, an applied problem is indicated when there is a "clash of values between two
or more groups, or the lack thereof" (Anonymous, 2002). The sociological solution in this case is to aid the groups involved in reaching a consensus, using methods that have been
shown to be effective in conflict resolution, so that the parties can reach a synthesis of opinion and working around and through their areas of disagreement. While this all may
sound problematic, and rather confusing to the student researching this topic, there is also a way of determining a problem area that is quite direct. Anonymous (2002) states that an
applied problem exists when a "group of persons collectively define a situation to be a problem." In this scenario, the solution suggested is that through the process of defining and
