An awareness of Hall's conflict styles can aid in resolving that conflict more quickly, whether it be in a manner of compromise or competition and whether it be in the board room or in the back yard, allowing the participants to return more quickly to the issues at hand. There are strengths in each style of conflict advantageous to each setting, and it is up to those involved to make honest assessment of which style would best suit their purposes and the current issues before them. In short, the stimulus of something being broken often provides the impetus to fix it. There have been a variety of interpretation of conflict management styles over the years, with some of the most popular and useful ones being relatively old, at least in terms of research age. Halls (1969) Conflict Management Survey is one of the leading models; others include Blake and Moutons (1964) model; the Thomas- Kilmann (1974) Conflict MODE Instrument; and Rahims (1983) Organizational Conflict Inventory (Volkema and Bergmann 5). Each has its own variations from the other models, but they all share the common characteristic of being two-dimensional interpreted in five style descriptions. Those five conflict styles are: "(a) collaborating (high assertiveness, high cooperativeness), (b) competing (high assertiveness, low cooperativeness), (c) accommodating (low assertiveness, high cooperativeness), (d) avoiding (low assertiveness, low cooperativeness), and (e) compromising (medium assertiveness, medium cooperativeness)" (Volkema and Bergmann 5). The styles of conflict as outlined in Halls Conflict Management Survey are useful in a variety of situations and can be of nearly universal application for assessing intrapersonal conflict in settings ranging from home life to the board room. Because of this adaptability to application in nearly all situations, Halls survey is used extensively in "American academic research, training seminars, and organizational intervention and development" (Volkema and Bergmann 5).
