The term "occupational therapy" is a misnomer in the fact that it is not limited only to striving to achieve activities that could be associated with a
specific occupation as in employment. The goal of occupational therapy is to restore physical function following a debilitating accident or illness. The patient may or may not be
attempting to return to or enter a formal occupation within the workforce; the goal is to enable the patient to do for himself all that s/he is able to achieve.
Dressler and MacRae (1998) describe a patient-centered program in California; the purpose here is to assess that program, testing its ability to meet
several tests of effective treatment that also gains practical results. Is the vision and mission of the program consistent with recovery? Rebeiro-Gruhl (2005)
explains that the focus of mental health occupational therapy in the past has been treatment only, and that there currently is underway a paradigm shift away from focusing on treatment
to focusing on recovery. This would seem to say that the goal of mental health occupational therapy is shifting from method to results, from perfecting an approach to effecting
recovery. Recovery is an admirable goal, and likely the only goal that carries true meaning for the patient and his family. The
program that Dressler and MacRae (1998) describe is one centered on "empowering the client and ... adapting and changing the environment" (p. 36). A third area the authors report
