Application Architecture Design One author states that "application architecture is the backbone of any software project and provides a strong fundamental foundation. The
application architecture should be extensible, scalable, manageable and reliable, while adhering to the latest industry standards" (Application Architecture Design, n.d.). Reese (2000) adds
that during the development process, each development role "is responsible for some level of tactical thought and some level of strategic thought" (p. 127) and that the "primary duty of
a system architect is to ask the question, What if...?" (Reese, 2000; p. 127). This is where the acknowledgment of strategic vs tactical designations is useful. In a
tactical approach to designing application architecture, the designer addresses only the issue at hand and ignores hypothetical (or future) issues. "Strategic thought, on the other hand, means thinking about
all possible worlds and weighing their probability" (Reese, 2000; p. 127). Reese (2000) uses the example of designing application architecture for a company that sells only fuzzy dice.
Though the tactical approach can produce an application architecture that addresses the companys current needs, the strategic approach will enable the company to "move into selling seat covers in the
future without rewriting the system ... A good system architect is a heavily strategic thinker" (Reese, 2000; p. 127). Determining the Basic Form
