Toward this end, the purpose here is to answer the question, "How does Apple incorporate make-to-order, make-to-stock and assemble-to-order in its major products?" Make-to-Order Dell is the recognized leader of the make-to-order production of computers. At Apple, make-to-order seems not to be an approach to production that Apples management looks on with favor. In fact, one author observes, "The way Dell makes and sells PCs is, in fact, the antithesis of the way Apple makes and sells its iPod music-players" (Technologys Mr Predictable, 2005; p. 82); the same can be assumed to hold true with Apples computers as well. Make-to-order also does not fit well with Apple philosophy and its approach to its business and its markets. Secrecy is a way of life (Wingfield, 2006), as evidenced by Apples insistence on keeping its operating system proprietary thereby excluding the third-party software developers that turned the DOS-based PC into the machine for business. The company will, however, upgrade hard drive size and memory, and will install one or more software packages for purchasers. Apple offers online sales, but most of Apples products are sold through retailers. Providing stock to those retailers seems to take priority over make-to-order (Technologys Mr Predictable, 2005). Make-to-Stock Make-to-stock, however, is another matter. Apple appears to base its manufacturing targets on future sales forecasts in the same manner that buyers of retail clothing estimate their needs for the next upcoming season.
