the most compelling uses of this theme can be found in Henrik Ibsens nineteenth-century social commentary, A Dolls House (1879) and in Tennessee Williams twentieth-century melodrama, A Streetcar Named Desire
(1949). Both plays feature female protagonists who are being held captive by the illusion of a fantasy world, and the plot structure involves the attempts in disrupting this perfect
universe with a brutal but flawed reality. In A Dolls House, Nora Helmer has been married to bank employee Torvald for eight years and they are the parents of two
children. However, their marriage is hardly an equal partnership, and Nora is regarded by her domineering husband as more of an affectionate pet or "little squirrel" (Ibsen 4) than
she is a wife. Their seemingly happy marriage is an illusion because Nora can only play the role her husband has cast for her - that of a scatterbrain
who cannot think independently and someone to obediently serve as an attractive adornment for his arm at parties. When Torvald becomes seriously ill and needs a change in climate
to regain his health, Nora is forced to take drastic measures in order to finance such an expensive trip. Because a female is unable to secure a loan in
her own name, she forges her fathers name. Torvalds health is restored, he is promoted to bank officer, and all appears to be well once again in the Helmer
household until fellow employee Nils Krogstad discovers Noras criminal deed and begins to blackmail her. She does not believe she has done anything wrong, but is worried about her
