effort consumed the already failing Russian economy. Tsar Nicholas II was an ineffective ruler in the best of times, and was clearly not up to the challenge of playing
the dual role of peacemaker at home while fighting a war overseas. Young Eduard M. Dune and his family were members of the working class. Like many of
their fellow workers, they were becoming increasingly disenchanted with a socioeconomic system that was more intent upon the exploitation of labor than it was with acknowledging and rewarding its value.
Dunes compelling memoir of his experiences as a member of the Bolshevik Red Guard entitled Notes of a Red Guard, offer readers a rare insiders glimpse into the conditions
that escalated into civil war. His observations also provide considerable insights into why the Russian Social-Democratic Workers Party (the Bolsheviks) would appeal greatly to the ordinary workers. As a
boy, Dune was already well acquainted with working conditions within the factories. He recalled, "From my earliest years I knew about factory life because of the tales my father
told. Each day his return home would be accompanied by stories of what had happened at the factory... about how to survive until payday, what to buy and what
to put off buying" (Dune, 1993, p. 17). Pay rates and total wages were not determined by any type of equitable scale, and therefore abuses to the system and
