What occurs all too often, however, is the intrusion of personal beliefs, stereotypes and bias that have no place in nursing. The common denominator among nurses may be an overwhelming compassion toward helping mankind, however, there is considerably more to the wide-ranging aspect of nursing than merely administering medicine; in fact, the myriad components that ultimately comprise the vast application of nursing often delve into issues of culturally competent care. II. CULTURAL IMPLICATIONS OF TREATMENT There are a number of important cultural considerations for this patient, not the least of which includes respect for and understanding of her cultural norms, such as strong family values, devout faith and patriarchy. Every society is bound by a set of rules - some written, some spoken, others explicitly followed by virtue of inherent knowledge but all universally understood within the confines of that particular culture - which serve to govern civilized behavior. The deviant behavior of breaking a cultural norm constitutes stepping over of very specific boundaries that prove to delineate a mandated proximity and/or behavior man has imposed upon his own species. Social norms play an integral role in both setting and meeting the standards of cultural competence, inasmuch as different cultures consider certain behaviors offensive. Personal space, for instance, has a tremendous variance where acceptability is concerned.
